International Women’s Day represents the revolutionary tradition and serves as a special public cultural space for China’s century-old women’s movement. The United Nations has celebrated International Women's Day since 1975, International Women's Year, recognizing the tradition of ordinary women striving for equal participation in society. In 1997, the General Assembly adopted a resolution inviting each country to select a day of the year to be declared the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and World Peace in accordance with its own historical and national traditions and customs.
