Dust sweeping, also known as dust removal, residue removal, dusting, and beating dust, is one of the traditional Chinese folk customs.
It originated from a religious ritual of the ancient Han people to drive away disease and epidemics. This ritual later evolved into the end-of-year cleaning, which embodies the Han working people's beautiful wishes to ward off evil spirits and disasters and welcome good fortune.
In the north it is called sweeping the house, and in the south it is called dusting. Thoroughly clean the indoors and outdoors, in front of and behind the house, and wash all the clothes, bedding and utensils to welcome the New Year in a clean manner.
Everyone, big and small, is preparing for the New Year. Before and after the Kitchen God worship and until New Year's Eve, there is usually a general cleaning. The year's accumulated dust in the corners, under the bed, and on the pillars and beams of the house must be cleared away with a broom on this day. The metal handles on the cabinets should also be wiped clean. This is a very old custom.
The tools used for "sweeping the dust" also have their own particularities. In the past, people usually went to the mountainside to find a lot of bamboo threads, tied them together, and made a duster.
When setting off firecrackers on the morning of the first day of the new year, the dust, firecrackers and other debris should be put together.
It’s a new year, and we must not let our wealth slip away. We must have a good start. It takes three days before the garbage can be processed. This is called "accumulating wealth."
