The "Mid-July Festival" was originally a folk festival for ancestor worship in ancient times, and it was called the "Zhongyuan Festival" because of the Taoist saying after the Eastern Han Dynasty.
Taoism believes that the 15th day of the seventh lunar month is the birthday of the Earth God. On the day of praying to the Earth God for forgiveness, the underworld will release all ghosts and the deceased ancestors can return home for reunion. Therefore, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month is called the "Zhongyuan Festival".
It is called "Yulanpen Festival" in Buddhism. During the Tang Dynasty when the rulers promoted Taoism, the Taoist Zhongyuan Festival began to flourish, and gradually "Zhongyuan" was fixed as the name of the festival and has been used to this day. Origin of the Ghost Festival

The origin of the Zhongyuan Festival is also closely related to the Buddhist "Yulanpen Festival". "Menlan" is a Sanskrit word, meaning hanging upside down, and "pen" refers to the container for offerings. They believe that offering this item can relieve the suffering of their deceased parents and relatives.
There is a story recorded in the Buddhist scripture "Mullabon Sutra". It is said that Maudgalyayana (also known as Maudgalyayana), one of the ten great disciples of Sakyamuni, after obtaining the six supernatural powers (six kinds of wisdom), wanted to repay his parents for raising him. So he used his spiritual eyes to observe and saw that his deceased mother was suffering in the realm of hungry ghosts, and was so emaciated that her bones were just skin and bones and she looked like a non-human. Mulian was very sad, so he filled his bowl with rice and wanted to give it to his mother. However, the rice turned into ashes before his mother could even eat it.
Mulian was helpless and cried to the Buddha to help save his mother.
The Buddha said, "Your mother has committed serious sins. You alone cannot save her. You need the spiritual power of the monks from all directions. On the 15th day of the seventh month, when the monks have completed their summer retreat, you should hold a grand offering of food and drink to the monks from all directions. Only by relying on their spiritual power can you save your mother."
Mulian followed the Buddha’s instructions, and his mother was truly saved from the realm of hungry ghosts.
The Buddha also said: "From now on, all Buddhist disciples who want to be kind and filial can prepare a variety of food and set up a wide range of Ullambana offerings to support the monks on the 15th day of the seventh month when the Buddha is in a state of comfort. This will not only increase the blessings and longevity of living parents, but also help deceased parents escape from the sea of suffering and gain happiness, in order to repay their parents for their upbringing.
