Is the summer solstice on the lunar calendar or the solar calendar? Are there any taboos?
"Kezun Xiandu Manuscript" records: "When the sun reaches its northernmost point, the day is at its longest, and the shadow is shortest, so it is called the summer solstice. 'Zhi' means the extreme." So, is the summer solstice calculated according to the lunar calendar or the solar calendar? What are the taboos on this day? The fifth month of the lunar calendar is a beautiful time as described by the ancients: "The ground is covered with shade from the trees, the sun is at noon, and I wake up from my dream by the sound of a nightingale." Is the summer solstice on the lunar or solar calendar?

The summer solstice is one of the 24 solar terms in my country. The 24 solar terms can reflect the changes of seasons, guide agricultural activities, and affect the food, clothing, housing and transportation of thousands of households.
The 24 solar terms are divided according to the position of the sun on the ecliptic (the orbit of the earth around the sun). Considering the sun starting from the vernal equinox (0 degrees of ecliptic longitude, when the sun shines vertically on the equator), every 15 degrees forward is a solar term; a circle of movement and return to the vernal equinox is a tropical year, which totals 360 degrees, so it is divided into 24 solar terms. The dates of the solar terms are relatively fixed in the Gregorian calendar. For example, the beginning of spring always falls between February 3rd and 5th in the Gregorian calendar. But in the lunar calendar, the dates of the solar terms are difficult to determine. Taking the Beginning of Spring as an example, it can be as early as the 15th day of the 12th lunar month of the previous year and as late as the 15th day of the first lunar month.
Therefore, the summer solstice is based on the Gregorian calendar, so the summer solstice in 2019 is on June 21.

What are the taboos during the Summer Solstice?

The arrival of the summer solstice is a warning of hot summer weather. After the summer solstice comes the dog days of summer, the hottest period of the year. So, at this time, everyone needs to pay attention to a few points.
Avoid eating raw or cold food or drinking tea on an empty stomach at night. Some people with weak constitution or the elderly often feel a cold stomach and have difficulty digesting the food they eat. Be careful not to eat raw, cold, or greasy foods at night, otherwise it will cause abdominal distension, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Drinking tea on an empty stomach can easily damage the body's yang energy. The salty taste draws tea into the kidneys, which can easily damage kidney yang and cause symptoms such as diarrhea and dysmenorrhea.
Avoid cold showers. The weather is hot during the summer solstice and people's sweat glands are in an open state. Therefore, cold air can easily invade the human body and cause damage to the yang energy. It can easily cause symptoms such as cold hands and feet, and calf cramps. Even when taking a bath with hot water, you should be careful to avoid wind after bathing, especially for children.
The editor would like to remind everyone here, don’t be greedy for temporary coolness, even in the hot weather, you must pay attention to your health!
