When is New Year's Day?

The word "New Year's Day" first appeared in the "Ya Yue Ge" by Liang people in Southern Dynasties: "Four seasons mark the new New Year's Day, and longevity begins today." Yuan means first or beginning and Dan means morning. Yuan and Dan together refer to the beginning of the year, which is the day when the year begins. However, the choice of which day to take as the beginning of the year has been different in different dynasties in my country.
Although there was New Year's Day in ancient times, the New Year's Day defined in each dynasty was not a single concept and the date was not fixed. The only thing in common is that the first day of each month is New Year's Day.
In the Xia Dynasty, the first day of the first lunar month was the New Year's Day; in the Shang Dynasty, the first day of the twelfth lunar month was the New Year's Day; in the Zhou Dynasty, the first day of the eleventh lunar month was the New Year's Day; in the Qin Dynasty, the first day of the tenth lunar month was the New Year's Day;
In the first year of Emperor Wu of Han's Taichu reign, Sima Qian created the "Taichu calendar" and set the first day of the first lunar month as New Year's Day, the same as the regulations of the Xia Dynasty, so it was also called the "Xia calendar" and was used until the Xinhai Revolution.
During the Republic of China period, Sun Yat-sen designated the first day of the first lunar month as the Spring Festival and the first day of January in the Gregorian calendar as the New Year. This is the prototype of today's New Year's Day, but it was not called New Year's Day at that time. It was not until the founding of New China that it was called New Year's Day.

How to celebrate New Year's Day:

Since New Year's Day was born during the Republic of China period and evolved from the Spring Festival, when China first began to celebrate New Year's Day, the customs and habits of the celebration were of course mostly similar to those of the Spring Festival, or a smaller version of the Spring Festival. After all, New Year's Day is not a traditional festival in my country. Although some traditional ways of celebration are still used, such as setting off firecrackers, killing three animals, worshiping ghosts and gods, and paying homage to ancestors, it does not necessarily occupy an important position in people's minds. In modern times, the New Year's Day celebration customs are simpler.
New Year's Day celebration method 1:
It is known throughout China and even the whole world that many countries have designated New Year's Day as a legal holiday and have holidays on this day. After the founding of New China, New Year's Day was also designated as a legal holiday with one day off.
New Year's Day celebration method 2:
The traditional Chinese way of celebration is still preserved among the people, especially in the rural areas. Every New Year’s Day, every household would set off firecrackers, kill chickens and geese, and after paying homage to various gods, the family would gather together for a meal.
Three ways to celebrate New Year’s Day:
What is more common now are activities organized by groups, such as New Year's Day parties, hanging slogans to celebrate New Year's Day, or holding collective activities. In the past, there were organizations that beat drums and gongs and performed folk dances together, which can still be seen on TV documentaries. With the development of science and technology today, it has evolved into galas and the like. In recent years, there have been programs such as traveling and gatherings. Anyway, there are not many traditions on New Year's Day, so people can do whatever they want on this holiday. In fact, New Year's Day only means a one-day holiday for the younger generation.
