The Liangshan Yi Torch Festival is one of the first batch of intangible cultural heritage lists announced by China. It is one of the top ten folk festivals in China and one of the top ten famous festivals in Sichuan. It has been included in the "2010 World Intangible Cultural Heritage Approval Project" by UNESCO.

The origin of Torch Festival

As far as the Yi people are concerned, the legend about the Torch Festival is actually the transcendence of the original cultural form by the new cultural form after their lifestyle shifted from nomadic to agricultural. The Naxi proverbs about the Torch Festival legend preserve important information about the origin of the Torch Festival, and together with the records in "Yuxi Bianshi", "Luquan County Chronicles" and "Dongxi County Chronicles", they provide important clues for exploring the origin of the Torch Festival. Although the legends about the Torch Festival in Dali and Kunming have obscured the origin of the Torch Festival, the term "Star Return Festival" still reveals the source and profound culture of the Torch Festival.
