What does the God of Cars mean?

"Three vehicles moving during Xiaoman" is a vivid summary of the Xiaoman farming work in the south of the Yangtze River. The so-called "three wheels" are the water wheel, spinning wheel and oil wheel. In agricultural proverbs, people use "full" to refer to the abundance of rainfall. Grain Full is the time for topdressing early rice and transplanting mid-season rice in the south of the Yangtze River. If the fields are not full of water, the field ridges will dry out and crack, making it impossible to transplant rice, affecting the harvest of crops. Therefore, in years of drought, people would think ahead and make clever arrangements to use human or animal power to drive water wheels to irrigate paddy fields. In the past, when walking along the paddy fields in remote ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River, you would often see buffaloes with their eyes covered turning the wooden wheel of the waterwheel to drive the keel waterwheel to draw water, or people using their feet to alternately pedal the wheel to draw water.

Why do we have to "worship the God of Vehicles" during Xiaoman?

In the old days, waterwheels for irrigation and water drainage were major events in rural areas. As the saying goes, "Three waterwheels start during the Grain Full season." Waterwheels were usually started during the Grain Full season. Prior to this, farmers held a "water grabbing" ceremony in the village market area of Haining, which was meant as a drill. Usually, an elderly deacon would gather all the households, determine a date, and make preparations. At dawn, everyone would go out, light torches, and eat wheat cakes, wheat biscuits, and wheat balls on the base of the waterwheel. When the deacon used drums and gongs as a signal, everyone would respond with percussion instruments and step onto the waterwheels that had been installed in advance on the small river. Dozens of waterwheels would step together to divert river water into the fields until the river bank was dry.
Offering sacrifices to the God of Carts is also an ancient custom in rural areas. According to legend, the "God of Carts" is a white dragon. Farmers place fish, meat, incense and candles on the base of the cart to worship it before drawing water. The special thing is that there is a cup of white water in the offering, which is poured into the fields during the sacrifice, with the intention of wishing for a prosperous water source. The above old customs show the importance farmers attach to water conservancy and irrigation.
