What does it mean that the Winter Solstice is as important as the New Year?

"Winter Solstice is as important as New Year's Day" is a Chinese proverb, which means that according to the old folk customs, Winter Solstice is more important than New Year's Day. During the winter solstice, people visit relatives and worship their ancestors, and the streets are very lively.
The Winter Solstice, also known as the Rinanzhi, Winter Festival, and Sub-Sui, has always been a festival that people attach great importance to. During the pre-Qin period, customs and cultures varied from north to south, and local customs had not yet been integrated and popularized. Many festivals had a history but lacked records. Many ancient festivals and customs are rarely recorded in written works.
"Book of the Later Han Dynasty's Etiquette" states: "Around the winter solstice, gentlemen rest and keep quiet, and officials stop working." They also select "capable people" to play the harp and the sheng and play the "Huangzhong tune" to show celebration. During the Tang and Song dynasties, the winter solstice and the beginning of the year were equally important. Meng Yuanlao of the Southern Song Dynasty wrote in his "Dongjing Menghualu": "November is the winter solstice. The capital city attaches great importance to this festival. Even the poorest people save money throughout the year and wear new clothes on this day, prepare food and drink, and worship their ancestors. The government opens the gates and celebrates the festival as if it were a New Year's Day."
The Qing Jia Lu records that "Winter Solstice is as important as New Year's Day."

Does Winter Solstice mean Little New Year?

From today's perspective, the Winter Solstice is not a small year.
Although both the Winter Solstice and the Little New Year are both traditional festivals in my country, the Winter Solstice is not the Little New Year. The Little New Year festival comes after the Winter Solstice. The traditional folk Little New Year (dust-sweeping and kitchen god worship day) is on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. In most parts of the south, the tradition of celebrating the Little New Year on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month is still maintained. The winter solstice falls on December 21-23 of the Gregorian calendar.
So, from today's perspective, the Winter Solstice is not a small year.
However, because the winter solstice is also called the southern solstice, winter festival, and Yasui, "Yasui" means minor new year. In ancient times, many areas also called the winter solstice the Little New Year.
However, with the changes of the times, the winter solstice is not as important as it was in ancient times.
There are still very few places that regard the winter solstice as the Little New Year.
